Humans vs Zombies
After Action Report
Date: 19 September 2009
Location: JT’s Frontline Paintball Club
Near Napean, Ontario
Time: 1630-0030 hrs
Weather: Night-4 deg C, damp, fog
Game Day: sunny, 17-20 deg C
Attendance: +/- 140
Paint: Draxxus Scenario Blaze
Field: The field was “U” shaped with a gravel road running up the centre to the dead box. The Jungle, dense brush, tall grass with narrow paths cut throughout, scattered small bunkers randomly placed. Southern edge of the field, was on the right of the road when moving towards dead box.
The Trenches were on the left, North Edge, and consisted of trenches cut randomly through an open field. 2 large dug outs were situated on both the western and eastern edges with 2 Towers on the North and South edges.
On the Eastern side of the field was “The ridge”, a small hill, approx 50-5 ft in elevation and a 7% grade leading to a plateau littered with bunkers, a 2 storey tower in the centre, a command trailer (where the bomb had to be placed), and numerous sandbag and tin walled bunkers. The plateau was surrounded by a tree line of approx 20-30 feet in depth.
Situation: The Terrorists (zombies) needed to plant the bomb, set the timer, and defend to prevent the Black ops (Humans) from disarming he bomb. Both sides were roughly equal in numbers at the beginning. The Terrorists started in the Jungle and Black Ops began in the trenches.
Should the bomb detonate, all players in the deadbox became Zombies. The Generals then had the option of joining together to defeat a common foe or continuing the fight independently. Hidden throughout the field were pods containing 2 glow sticks-the ‘antidote’.
Joker, Squad Leader of 3/3/5 of the HeadHunters, 3rd Platoon, Unit 3 of the CSPO was the General for the Terrorists. With him were Zboi, Bearcat, Fez, Stickman, and Blitz of the HeadHunters.
HeadHunter01, also of the HeadHunters, Jokers Father, and General of Unit 3, CSPO was the General for the Black Ops side. Serving with him was Frank, (Command Guard), Toad (Command Guard), Beaker 99 (SSGT-R 3/3/7 –HeadHunters), Lt Sectio_8 (3rd Plt, HeadHunters), Chef (3/3/7 HeadHunters), Double Tap (3/3/6 recruit, HeadHunters), Wheatkings (Lt, 2nd Platoon, Fighting Third-CSPO), and Stilgar of the Fighting Third.
Both generals also had approx 65-70 players from the local area.
Game:
Players Brief was at 1600 hrs (approx) and saw both Generals have an opportunity to organize their forces. Frank, Command Guard, was assigned 10 players (approx) as was Lt Wheatkings, Lt Section_8, SSGT-R Beaker. All sections were tasked with finding antidotes and finding/harassing/killing Joker and his command group,
Frank was given the task of leading his Squad to sweep the Jungle-close quarters.
Joker will need to explain his initial plan. My observation was he appeared to expend the largest part of his forces to taking and controlling the Ridge. This he did initially as it took longer than anticipated to move out of the trenches.
30 minutes (+/-) in saw the Terrorists with a secure hold on the Southern half of the ridge including the trailer where the bomb was to be planted.
Toad, Beaker, Chef, and I attempted to move up the Western tape line only to be met in the brush paths by Jokers blocking force. Approx 4-5 players in Dye/Empire clothing and 1 former Stockholm Joy Division member. This blocking force effectively shut the door on my small group but were also unable to advance. In this engagement I lost Beaker, then Chef, Then Toad, I was eventually killed when I rolled out to eliminate 1 of the blockers and was in turn hit hard by several more. Well played by the terrorists.
Upon re-insertion, Toad, Beaker, Chef and I proceeded to advance up the centre while radio comms indicated Frank was busy trying to penetrate the Jungle. Lt Wheatkings was also attempting to advance on he Western flank of the terrorists.
Our advance up the middle was progressing well and the local players were responding and performing well to the HeadHunters leadership. I was particularly impressed with the willingness and daring of several younger (10-14 yrs) players.
With Toad giving cover, Beaker putting to good use his T-9 with First Strike, and Chef off the my left suppressing several bunkers, I mad a rush to the outside of a large “u-shaped’ sandbag bunker. Upon crashing headlong into the bunker, I was taken under flanking fire from a small bunker to the southwest and started receiving effective fire from the west. At this point I began what is becoming an all to common series of flopping from side to side narrowly escaping elimination. I was able to eliminate the most immediate threat by becoming one with a row of sandbags and firing around the corner.
It was at this point that I must have got careless as my personal “southern Flank” took several rapid hits. I then put up my hand and was rewarded with a gog shot (later I learned that it was a parting gift from Joker).
Shortly after, my command group-Toad, Beaker, Chef- joined me in the deadbox.
Upon re-insertion. We again plunged up the centre and largely due to the fortitude of the local players, we pushed the terrorists South and the West off the idge and back into the tall grass and brush of the Jungle.
Toad and I then proceeded to walk upright while laying suppressive fire. We then organized a hasty attack using a tactical line of about 20-25 players advancing in 3-5 pace rushes.
This was made difficult as we were advancing directly into a setting sun and where thereby effectively blinded.
Throughout this battle, refs were being liberal with smoke grenades adding a ‘touch of atmosphere”.
We were successful in pushing the Terrorists out of the Jungle and a ‘restart’ was called to the surprise of many.
At this point, the bomb was set for 1 hr and planted in the far western bunker of the trenches. Black Ops began in the Jungle with the Terrorists in the trenches, Joker organized a strong defence and effectively blunted our attack both down the centre of the ridge and from the western flank. Round 2 ended with the bomb detonating with a loud siren and fireworks exploding.
Round 1 went to Black Ops, Round 2 to the Terrorists.
Supper Break was called at 1930 hrs and it was still 50/50 as to who, Joker or I, would be leaving in the casket we had brought.
Night Game:
The night game or “Zombie” game began approx 2030 hrs with the Humans occupying the Ridge and the Zombies having their choice of starting in either the jungle or Trenches or both. Numbers were again roughly equal at the start.
The weather had dampened and cooled considerably causing minor paint issues.
The field was dark except for shadows thrown by several large ‘construction light towers” situated on the Southern, North Western edge and along the entrance road.
Each player was issued a glow stick, green for Zombies-blue for Humans, and instructed to wear it on a string about their neck.
Frank was assigned to hold the Southern tape line, Lt Section_8 tasked with the Northern border with the trenches, Lt Wheatkings was tasked with running with the reaction team and redeploying the troops according to need after re-insertion. My Command Guard Toad and I organized the Centre to afford a good overall view of the battle.
Large fireworks were exploding periodically overhead, smoke grenades dispersed a thick ground hugging blanket across the ground, roman candles shot randomly across the battle field and the lights were randomly turned on and off casting eerie shadows while suddenly illuminating players attempting covert movement.
It was at this point that Joker, whom I was certain would expend his main effort approaching out of the tall cover afforded by the Jungle, almost won the day. His play style is akin to a hyperactive pit bull, hitting hard and fast. He exhibited a level of patience that almost outlasted mine.
Random gunfights with either Zombies or shadows, broke out on the trenches border with occasional probes along the Southern tape line.
Toad and traveled constantly along the frontline encouraging the troops and redistributing pockets of players (mostly younger) who huddled together out of anticipation and nerves caused by the dark and random explosions.
About 2300 hrs, the final attack began in earnest with a medium weight attack from the trenches and a strong push from the Southern tape after Zombies had belly crawled a far distance to within yards of our frontline.
The numbers were staggering and the fire withering as the Zombies began folding up my left (Southern) flank and the fire dropped off quickly on the Northern (trenches).
Toad and I fell back to the darkened tree line to evaluate when we determined to advance through he centre and disappear into the jungle in order to hit the Zombies from their ‘6’.
While executing this plunge, we were taken under fire from our left and we took cover behind a bunker. I leaned around the right edge and saw a zombie leap up from the shadow and begin charging. My mind recognized the distinctive run of Joker and I nearly broke the trigger of my T9 as I must have inadvertently put the safety on!
While scrambling backwards and narrowly avoiding Jokers burst, I knew the defining moment was nigh. I was able to put 3-4 First Strike rounds into Joker (unfortunately for him the range was down to about 4-5 feet), effectively stopping him.
With Joker down, Toad and I the only surviving Humans that we knew, we set about prolonging the end by moving and getting a few more kills with our remaining few rounds.
The game ended with Toad and I being killed. Joker was placed into his coffin and carried off the field of battle by the HeadHunters. He was then cremated on the funeral pyre erected by JT’s Staff. This video is reportedly available on youtube.
Summary:
An absolutely excellent game, well staffed, well organized, and the local Ottowa players really put forth great effort for their chosen cause!
HeadHunter01 Out.
